What to Wear to Garba Night

Chaniya choli, kediyu, kurta, or just clothes you can spin in: what people actually wear to garba nights and classes, plus the footwear question, answered.

For a garba night, most women wear a chaniya choli (a flared, mirror-worked skirt and blouse with a dupatta) and most men wear a kediyu or kurta. None of it is required: comfortable clothes you can spin in work fine. Expect two-plus hours of dancing, so choose flat, secure footwear; many dancers go barefoot.

Navratri 2026 runs October 11 to 20, and with the Bay Area hosting more than 50 garba and dandiya events in 2025, there is a good chance a night is already on your calendar. Here is what people actually wear, what each piece is called, and what to choose if your closet contains zero Indian clothes.

What is a chaniya choli?

The chaniya choli is garba’s signature outfit, and it is built for the dance. Three pieces: the chaniya, a flared skirt that blooms outward on every spin; the choli, a fitted, often backless blouse; and the dupatta, a long scarf draped across the body or tied at the waist. Traditional Gujarati versions are a riot of color, heavy with embroidery, tiny stitched mirrors (abhla), and beadwork, so the whole circle glitters under the lights when the spinning starts.

Two practical notes from experience. A heavily worked chaniya choli can weigh several pounds, which you will feel by hour two, so lighter fabrics are the veteran move for nights you plan to dance hard. And pin or tie the dupatta securely; a loose dupatta and a fast three-clap circle do not mix.

What do men wear to garba?

The traditional answer is the kediyu (also called kedia): a pleated, flared top that ends above the waist, worn with loose pants or a dhoti, often in the same bright mirror-worked style as the chaniya choli. Paired with an embroidered cap or a colorful turban at festive events, it is the classic Gujarati garba look.

The everyday answer is a kurta, the knee-length tunic worn across South Asia, over jeans, churidar, or joggers. At any Bay Area garba night you will see everything from full kediyu to plain cotton kurtas to polo shirts. Breathable fabric matters more than tradition points; garba floors get hot.

What if I don’t own any Indian clothes?

Come anyway. This question keeps real people home every October, so let’s be direct: nobody is checking outfits at the door, and garba circles are full of first-timers, non-Gujaratis, and non-Indians in regular clothes. Garba began as Gujarati devotional dance, but the modern circle is proudly open, and that includes the dress code (more on the dance’s roots and its worldwide present in our guide to what garba is).

If you want to lean in without buying a full outfit: a simple kurta costs about as much as a t-shirt at Indian clothing shops or online, and a borrowed dupatta over Western clothes reads as festive immediately. Friends who own chaniya cholis usually own several and love lending them. Ask. And if this is your very first garba, the rest of the first-timer playbook is in our guide for non-Gujaratis.

What should I wear to a garba class?

Not a chaniya choli. Classes are for learning and sweating, and the dress code is athletic:

  • Top: breathable t-shirt or tank; you will be moving for the full hour.
  • Bottom: leggings, joggers, or shorts, anything with full range of motion for stepping and spinning.
  • Feet: bare feet or flat, flexible shoes (see below).
  • Bring: water and a small towel. A Garba Groove class pairs garba with a HIIT-style workout format, and it earns the towel.

Save the mirror-work for the events the classes prepare you for. Check the Navratri 2026 Bay Area guide for where those nights are landing this season, or browse upcoming events.

Should I dance barefoot or wear shoes?

Both are everywhere, and each has a case.

Barefoot is the traditional choice, rooted in garba’s devotional origins, where the dance floor around the goddess is treated as sacred ground. It is also simply better for pivots: clean turns, no grip fighting you. Many community venues and most classes are barefoot-friendly.

Shoes make sense on rough convention-center floors or if you want ankle support. Choose flat and flexible: leather juttis, thin-soled sneakers, or dance shoes. Skip heels (two hours of stepping will not forgive them) and skip chunky running shoes, whose grippy soles catch mid-spin.

Whatever you wear on your feet, the steps matter more than the outfit, and steps are learnable. If you want to walk into your first garba night dressed right and dancing right, book your first class and get the basics into your legs before the lights come up.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to a garba night?

Traditional wear is a chaniya choli for women and a kediyu or kurta with loose pants for men, but any comfortable clothes you can move and spin in are welcome. Prioritize breathable fabric and flat, secure footwear, because you will be dancing for hours.

What is a chaniya choli?

A chaniya choli is the traditional three-piece garba outfit: a flared skirt (chaniya), a fitted blouse (choli), and a draped scarf (dupatta), typically decorated with bright embroidery and small mirrors that catch the light as you spin.

Can I wear Western clothes to garba?

Yes. Nobody is checking outfits at the door, and every garba night includes people in jeans, leggings, and t-shirts. If you want to nod to the occasion without a full outfit, a kurta over leggings or jeans works perfectly.

Do you dance garba barefoot or in shoes?

Both are common. Dancing barefoot is traditional and gives you clean pivots; many venues and classes allow it. If you prefer shoes, choose flat, flexible ones like juttis or thin-soled sneakers, and avoid heels and chunky running shoes.

What should I wear to a garba class?

Athletic wear: breathable top, leggings or joggers, and flat flexible shoes or bare feet. A garba class is a real workout with constant spinning, so dress like you would for dance or cardio and bring water.
