Garba classes, beginner to advanced

Real choreography, in a circle, taught from zero. No experience needed, said loudly.

Garba Groove classes run in three levels, beginner to advanced, and fuse garba with a HIIT-style workout. You learn real choreography in a circle, taught from zero, no experience needed. A drop-in is $25, and the mix-and-match 15-Class Pack brings it to $18 a class.

Pick your level. Or grow through all three.

Beginner: Rhythms & Spins. Where everyone starts, including the people now leading the circle. The core garba steps, the claps, the spins, taught from zero at a pace that assumes nothing. If you've never danced a step of garba, this room was built for you.

Intermediate: Grace & Barrels. The steps get faster, the sequences get longer, and it starts to feel less like following and more like flowing. Most dancers move here after a handful of beginner classes; if you've danced any style before, you may land here fast.

Advanced: Master Garba. Speed, styling, and the harder traditional variations. This is the front of the circle, for dancers who want to be the ones others watch at Navratri.

Every level is open to every background. You don't need to be Gujarati, or Indian, or a dancer. You need one free evening.

The format: garba first, sweat included

Classes fuse garba choreography with a HIIT-style structure: short, high-energy rounds of steps and sequences with quick resets in between. It means you repeat each move enough times that it actually sticks, and your heart rate climbs without a single burpee.

Here's the honest part: the workout is real, and you'll feel it the next morning. But nobody stays for the calories. You stay because the circle learns together, laughs at the same mistimed claps, and notices when you're not there. Come for the dance. The rest finds you.

What to expect in a class

  1. A warm welcome. Someone greets you at the door, first-timers get placed next to a friendly regular, and instruction starts from wherever the room is.
  2. Steps, built up in layers. Each sequence starts slow, then rides the music up to full speed. You'll be moving with the circle inside the first ten minutes.
  3. The circle does the work. Everyone faces in, so you're never dancing at a mirror or hiding in a back row. Nobody learns alone, so nobody's bad alone.
  4. A real finish. You leave sweaty, louder than you arrived, and with a step you didn't have an hour ago.

Wear anything you can move and spin in; flexible shoes or barefoot both work. Bring water. That's the whole kit.

Packs: fifteen classes to actually learn this

One pack, every level below advanced, any class on the schedule. Mix and match beginner and intermediate freely, come when you can, and treat it as what it is: a learning journey, not a punch-card of workouts. Fifteen classes is roughly a season, and a season is what it takes for the steps to become yours.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need dance experience to join?

No. Most people arrive never having done a full garba, and plenty have never danced anything at all. Beginner classes start from zero, and the circle format means you're always following the room, never performing for it. If you have danced before, any style, you'll pick up the choreography fast.

Which level should I start at?

Beginner, almost always, and there's no shame in it: it's where the people now at the front of the circle started. If you've danced other styles seriously or grew up doing garba, try a beginner class first anyway; the format and taali structure are worth one session, and moving up after that is quick.

How do the packs work across levels?

Mix and match freely: a 15-pack can be nine beginner classes and six intermediate, or whatever your week allows. Advanced classes need the Advanced 20-Pack. Packs are personal (one dancer per pack) and expire on the printed window.

What should I wear?

Anything comfortable you can spin and move in. Flexible shoes or barefoot both work; most people dress like they would for any dance or fitness class. Save the chaniya choli for Navratri.

What happens when my pack expires before I've used it?

Email us before your pack expires if life got in the way. We handle extensions case by case, not automatically.

Do classes run all year?

Classes run in seasonal sessions today. The path to more is the waitlist: when enough people in a city sign up, the classes keep coming after the season. Add your name and you'll hear the moment new dates land.
